Abbey Library, which houses some 140,000 documents – in part hand-written and over a thousand years old. The library probably also has Switzerland's most beautiful Rococo hall. The entire Abbey precinct was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983. St. Gallen is also a university town with a focus on the economic sciences. Lunchbreak in St Gallen and time for shopping. Our excursion continues to the little town of Appenzell, which is situated in a singularly beautiful landscape of rolling hills. The region is known for rural customs and traditions such as the ceremonial descent of the cattle in autumn and cultural events such as folk music and rustic dances. It´s famous for its houses with richly decorated facades. The town is ideal for a leisurely walk or for browsing in the many shops offering local products. The Appenzell Museum, housed in the Townhall, is dedicated to Appenzell's history and culture, which strongly reflects rural and religious traditions. Returning to Unterwasser we´ll pass Mount Säntis, the landmark of the Lake Constance region. The mountain, which can be seen from miles away, is also well-known for extreme weather conditions that otherwise only occur in the High Alps. A first weather station was built here in 1882, and has been manned by a weatherman ever since. |
