The compact metropolis of eastern Switzerland between Lake Constance and Appenzellerland has a charming, traffic-free old town. Colourfully-painted oriel windows are a town feature. The Abbey precinct with the cathedral and Abbey Library has been accorded UNESCO World Heritage listing.
St.Gallen’s most famous landmark is its Baroque cathedral with the Abbey Library, which houses some 170,000 documents – in part hand-written and over a thousand years old. The library probably also has Switzerland’s most beautiful Rococo hall. The entire Abbey precinct was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983.
A trip to St. Gallen is always worthwhile. And that applies especially this year. Some reasons to pay a visit to the city between Lake Constance and the Säntis:
Tours of Eastern Switzerland, the land of textiles
If you are interested in textiles and fashion, then a visit to St.Gallen, the textile heartland, is an absolute must. The elaborate embroideries are famous worldwide – even celebrities like Michelle Obama or Cameron Diaz wear St.Gallen dresses. Guests can find out how they are made on the «Textilland Classic Tour» from this year onwards. In the meantime, Eastern Switzerland, the land of textiles, can be explored independently by car on the «Textilland Explorer Tour».
12th St.Gallen Festival St.Gallen Abbey Courtyard, 23 June – 7 July
The Abbey courtyard of the UNESCO World Heritage Site with magnificent baroque cathedrals will become the backdrop for a operatic drama. This year the programme features «Loreley», an opera by Alfredo Catalani. St.Gallen-Lake Constance Tourism is offering an attractive package for the occasion.
Everyone has heard of it. The delicious St.Gallen bratwurst. This year non-residents of St.Gallen can also become real bratwurst connoisseurs. In the new tasting seminar you will get to know the fine differences between the bratwursts, and you can pick your own favourite.
New Natural History Museum in St.Gallen
More room for nature. The new Natural History Museum in St.Gallen has opened its doors in the autumn of 2016. Along with larger exhibition spaces and a wider variety of exhibits, a nature park is also being created, with elements to stimulate all the senses.
St.Gallen Christmas – City of Stars
St.Gallen City Centre, late November to late December St.Gallen fills up with Yuletide spirit on the first day of Advent, when the lights of the 20-meter Christmas tree in the Abbey district are turned on. The UNESCO World Heritage Site with its concerts, Christmas market and quaint, cheerfully lit downtown alleyways becomes a wondrous excursion destination.
