Alsace - Strasbourg - Half Timbered Houses and More

Only the cathedral is more central. You live in the Mercure Strasbourg Centre and are about 600m on foot at Strasbourg Cathedral, made of red Vosges sandstone. This building also impressed Johann Wolfgang Goethe most when he came to Strasbourg for one and a half years to finish his law studies.

He was particularly taken with the beautiful rosette window on the second floor.

However, he is said not to have liked sauerkraut after an anecdote. Too bad, really. After all, the Alsatians invented the production of sauerkraut and Alsace is one of the largest European growing areas for white cabbage, which is then processed into sauerkraut. You should enjoy a so-called "choucroute" - a typical Alsatian sauerkraut platter. You can have beer with it, not just wine. About half of French beer products come from Alsace, especially in the Strasbourg area.

1st day - Arrival

Hotel reference. You will stay in the ****Hotel Mercure Centre or similar. Dinner in a nearby restaurant and overnight stay.

2nd day - Strasbourg

After your breakfast buffet in the hotel you will experience this lively city in traditional costume on foot. Half-timbered houses not only adorn the former tanner's quarter "La Petite France", but also along the Quai Bataliers and the Quai Saint Nicolas the narrow, in part age-skewed little houses crowd in. You discover the cathedral with the astronomical clock, the cathedral square, the Palais Rohan, where the boats depart and stroll through the alleys to the opera. You have free time to shop or take a boat trip on the Ill. The German Wilhelminian quarter or the stork breeding at the Orangery are also worth seeing. We would be happy to organize a full flame cake meal for you in a restaurant in Strasbourg. Overnight stay at the hotel.

3rd day - Alsatian Wine Route

After breakfast, your bus will take you to Obernai and the charming wine towns of Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr before you explore Colmar. Return to Strasbourg. Today we recommend a sauerkraut platter dinner in a typical restaurant.

In the morning you take a trip to Saverne, sometimes referred to as the "Alsatian Versailles", for its Château des Rohans, a sandstone castle furnished with boundless luxury. Continue to Wingen-sur-Moder with entry to the Lalique Museum. Glass and crystal works of art are shown here, especially by René Lalique, who also created numerous perfume bottles.
