In 1633, the residents of Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany, vowed, that if God spared them from the bubonic plague ravaging the region, they would produce a play thereafter for all time every 10 years depicting the life and death of Jesus. The death rate among adults had risen from one person per 1000 per year in October 1632 to twenty in the month of March 1633. After their vow, the adult death rate slowly subsided to one in the month of July 1633. The villagers believed they had been spared and thus kept their part of the vow when the play was first performed in 1634.

The Passion Plays in Oberammergau connect us in an impressive way with the life of Jesus. His suffering and death come very close to us, the ritualized distance falls away especially in these difficult times. Jesus does not remain in death! The Passion Plays do not end with the crucifixion, but with Jesus' resurrection to eternal life. We must never forget this: Suffering and dying never have the last word, but always life.

Only every 10 years the worldwide famous Passion Plays are performed in the Ammer Valley. Postponed by two years due to the Corona pandemic, it is now 2022 for the 42nd time curtain up for the great amateur play. We will not only experience the Passion Plays, but also other cultural highlights of the region.

Highlight of the trip: We experience the story of the last days of Jesus of Nazareth because of a vow made almost 400 years ago: provided that no one else dies of the plague, the people of Oberammergau swore in 1633 that you would perform the Passion and Death of Christ every 10 years. The community has kept this promise to this day. Since the 2020 Passion Play had to be postponed due to the Corona pandemic, the 42nd Passion Play will now take place in 2022. So it's 2022 - curtain up for the impressive open-air stage! The 5-hour performance begins in the afternoon with the entry into Jerusalem and tells the Passion story through the Last Supper to the Crucifixion. It ends in the late evening hours with the Resurrection. During the 3-hour intermission, we will enjoy a pre-ordered 3-course meal.

Day 1: Arrival
Transfer from Munich airport. On the way sightseeing of Landsberg am Lech. City tour. Lunch. Onward transfer to our Hotel for 2 nights. Dinner.

Day 2: Wieskirche and Passion Play
After breakfast we drive to the famous Wieskirche. The pilgrimage church of the Flagellated Savior on the Wies surprises with its interior richly decorated with rococo stucco. The Wies is often described as a piece of heaven on this sorrowful earth. In the afternoon it is curtain up for the impressive Open-Air stage. The seats are covered. The performance of the Passion Play begins at 1:30 pm. The 1st part will last until 16:00. During the break in the play, we will enjoy our 3-course meal and look forward to the 2nd part, which will begin at 7:00 pm. After the final applause around 21.30 we will return to our Hotel.

Day 3: Departure
Transfer to the airport and journey back.
