5 Days - Advent in Naples - city of cupolas and cribs

Italian liveliness - this is the city on the Gulf. Faith, popular piety, art and culture characterize the Advent season.

Day 1: Arrival and Charterhouse S. Martino

Flight to Naples. Upon arrival, we will soon discover an aspect of true "Napoletanità": in the baroque complex of the S. Martino Charterhouse, beautifully situated on the Vomero hill, there is probably the best historical collection of Neapolitan nativity scenes, because no Christmas without the Presepio in the house! Afterwards we drive to the accommodation.

Day 2: The faith of Naples - a walk through Via dei Tribunali

The Neapolitan soul lives for the city patron S. Gennaro. With their pathos and lust for drama, the faithful in his magnificently decorated cathedral follow the "blood miracle", the outcome of which is laid out for the benefit or woe of the city. In the cathedral we celebrate a service. In the Via dei Tribunali, the Cappella Sansevero, with its "veiled Christ" and churches like the Chiesa dei Girolamini, vie for our attention. A highlight is S. Chiara, whose cloister boasts the most beautiful majolica images in Campania. Not to be missed is the magnificent monumental church of S. Domenico Maggiore, which is closely linked to the life of the Church Father St. Thomas Aquinas is connected.

Day 3: The two faces of Pompeii: classical Marian pilgrimage and ancient tragedy

Today we make a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii. The Marienkirche, which has the rank of a papal basilica, is extremely popular with the faithful. The pilgrimage church impresses with Neo-Baroque architecture and conveys a vivid picture of Southern Italian piety through the abundance of votive offerings. Here we celebrate a service. With these impressions we visit the excavations of Pompeii. Through the tragedy of the summer of 79 AD, the entire ancient Mediterranean world becomes present: squares, temples, basilicas, and villas bring us close to the intense life of the inhabitants who fled the devastating Vesuvius outbreak.

Day 4: Mercy and Sacred Art - Pio Monte and Capodimonte

The Pio Monte della Misericordia welcomes us with an imposing altarpiece by Caravaggio depicting the seven bodily works of mercy that Pope Francis brought to the center of the Christian Annunciation. Later we take our time for Capodimonte, the former summer residence of the Bourbon dynasty ruling the kingdom of both Sicily. In a beautiful location above the city, this important art gallery houses a stately, by the noble family Farnese in the person of Pope Paul III. 15C collection with paintings by Botticelli, Raphael, Titian and El Greco.

Day 5: The popular piety of Naples - the cribs and return journey

Today, Neapolitan folk art is in the spotlight: we visit a nativity scene and stroll through the Via S. Gregorio Armeno, the hotspot of Nativity crib culture, whose figural ensembles are often an amusing to sassy mixture of sacred and profane. Transfer to the Airport. Flight back.
