Assisi and Padua – Journey to St. Francis and hl. Antonius

"Saints are people through whom the light of God shines." This anonymously delivered citation, we visit the places where the two beloved Saints Francis and Anthony lived and worked.

 

Day 1: Arrival

We fly to the Italy capital Rome: Transfer by bus to Assisi arrive there in the evening (4 nights).

 

Day 2: Assisi

In the morning we celebrate service in S. Francesco and visit the basilica with the tomb of the saint. We walk through the medieval Assisi, which has its outstanding importance as the birthplace and place of activity of St. Francis receives, and visit his parents' house. In the afternoon we will visit the Cathedral S. Rufino and S. Chiara, where the tomb of Sts. Klara is located. Afterwards there is the opportunity for a short hike (about 2 km) to the monastery of S. Damiano, whose first abbess is the St. Klara was.

 

Day 3: Assisi and Carceri

We start the day with a service in S. Maria degli Angeli and admire the Portiuncula Chapel, the Death Chapel of St. Franz. The afternoon bus ride to the Carceri. There you can visit the hermitage, where Francis retreated temporarily for worship and where in the 15th century Bernardine of Siena had a monastery built.

 

Day 4:  At the Rietital

We visit the hermitage Fonte Colombo, where the new version of the "Regula bullata" was created. The place is characterized by a solemn silence, but also by strength and mysticism. We make our way to the monastery at Greccio. Here the hl. Francis in the rock grotto after the birth of Jesus as a living crib to illustrate the history of the population. We hold a service in the sanctuary and visit the oldest nativity scene there. The magnificent view over the plain of Rieti is worthwhile.

 

Day 5: La Verna and Padua

In the early morning we drive to the La Verna mountain, where the St. Francis received the stigmata, the visible signs that he was marked by the Crucified. Here we visit the memorials and take a look at the "bed of Francis". Then we celebrate a service in the Stigmatisationskapelle. Then continue to Padua (2 nights).

 

Day 6: City of hl. Antonius

Padua, one of the oldest cities in northern Italy, is closely linked to the life and work of St. Antonius linked. We celebrate worship in the impressive Basilica of St. Anthony and gather our first impressions on a guided city tour of the historic center. The afternoon is free for a walk.

 

Day 7: Departure

In the morning we drive to Rome. Flight back.
